Now here's a critter you want to practice social distancing from! North American porcupines are large, solitary rodents commonly found in New England but less common in Connecticut. Although they are mostly nocturnal, they can be found perched in the top of a tree during the day or walking on the ground around dusk or dawn. Porcupines are herbivores and typically have 20,000 to 30,000 quills which cover most of their body. Thanks to Don for sharing this great video he captured in Colebrook! | Co

DEEP Foresters in northwestern Connecticut have been monitoring the situation with the spongy moth caterpillar infestation and are noting some impacts to the caterpillars from the maimaiga fungus (Entomophaga maimaiga) and NPV (nuclear polyhedrosis virus). Forester Jeremy Clark has provided a brief video about what is happening to the caterpillars. It is hoped the fungus and virus will continue to spread and kill caterpillars. While there is no promise of completely ending the infestation or dam

The long-tailed weasel is found throughout Connecticut, but its elusive nature makes it difficult to be seen. Weasels have incredibly high metabolisms, requiring them to consume up to 30% to 40% of their body weight daily! Relying on thick and brushy habitats along with residing in stonewalls, they primarily feed on small mammals, including mice, voles, and chipmunks. Special thanks to Kara for sharing this video! #WildlifeWednesday | Connecticut Fish and Wildlife

The DEEP Wildlife Division maintains over 100 wildlife management areas (WMAs) throughout Connecticut. WMAs provide diverse habitats and support a broad array of species. These properties are paramount to the Wildlife Division’s mission, which is to advance the conservation, use, and appreciation of Connecticut’s wildlife resources. Not everyone gets a chance to see and appreciate the full diversity of Connecticut’s wildlife, so this summer, Wildlife Division staff deployed motion-triggered trai

The beautiful weather continues around Connecticut! 24,500 trout have been stocked so far this fall, with another 25,000 or so to go. In addition, Atlantic Salmon stocking has kicked off and 203 2-year-old fish were stocked on 10/4 in the Shetucket River. Look for the Naugatuck River to be stocked next. Note to anglers fishing for stocked Atlantic Salmon: This year the Fisheries Division has tagged almost 1,300 Atlantic Salmon with an orange external anchor tag containing a unique 4-digit number

The call of annual cicadas is a familiar sound on hot, summer days. Males are best known for their incredibly loud mating calls, created by a specialized sound-producing organ known as the tymbal that is located on the abdomen. As adults, cicadas have a fairly short lifespan and have only a few weeks to mate and lay their eggs. Despite the loud sound, their cryptic camouflage makes them incredibly difficult to spot, especially when calling from a tree or other vegetation. Have you been able to c

Over 100,000 Northern Pike fry were donated from the Hackettstown fish hatchery in New Jersey. These fry will grow in the marsh until June, when we will collect the fingerlings, which will be about 5” long. Wahoo!! Nope not wahoo, channel catfish! After a couple of years where the CT DEEP Fisheries Division has not been able to get a delivery of channel catfish, we did today. 8,800 fish (11-18 inches) were distributed across the state to our community fishing waters (about 500 per waterbody). Connecticut residents have through Sunday, August 31 to report their wild turkey sighting(s). 🦃 The annual Wild Turkey Brood Survey helps Wildlife Division staff estimate the average number of turkey poults (young-of-the-year) per hen statewide to assess annual fluctuations in Connecticut’s turkey population.
