On June 27, 1844, at about 5:00 p.m., the Prophet Joseph and his brother Hyrum were murdered at Carthage Jail. A few days before he was killed, Joseph, aware of his danger, said, “I am going like a lamb to the slaughter; but I am calm as a summer’s morning” (Doctrine and Covenants 135:4).
