"Ribbon worm" These fractal-faced worms belong to the phylum Nemertea, a group of animals that hunt using a tongue-like proboscis like the one you see shooting out above. However, in this case the worm is under an immense amount of stress. The reason for the expelling of the proboscis is that the worm thinks that it is being attacked. It's trying to leave the proboscis behind for the predator so that it can escape – it's trying everything to stay alive. Link to article in the comments. Mysteriol

A ribbon worm’s hunting technique is often referred to as a “secret attack” because of its remarkable and stealthy approach to catching prey. It uses a retractable, tube-shaped organ called a proboscis to launch a sudden, precise strike. In certain species, the tip of this proboscis bears a harpoon-like stylet that can puncture the prey and inject a mix of paralyzing toxins and digestive enzymes! 🪱 🕸️ This deadly combination enables the ribbon worm to immobilize its target while beginning dige

Knowledge Matrix on Instagram: "This organism is a ribbon worm, and the white branching material visible outside the body is its proboscis. The proboscis is a long elastic structure normally stored internally and remains hidden under typical conditions. In rare moments it extends outward by turning inside out from an internal cavity, creating the branching appearance seen here. The structure often reaches lengths longer than the body itself before retracting back inside. Such external visibility

🧪 on Instagram: "A ribbon worm employs a highly specialized hunting mechanism often likened to a “secret attack.” It uses a retractable, tube-like organ called a proboscis, which can be rapidly extended to strike prey with remarkable speed. In certain species, the proboscis is equipped with a sharp stylet that pierces the target and delivers paralyzing toxins along with digestive enzymes. This enables the worm to immobilize its prey and initiate digestion almost immediately, demonstrating a hig

The ribbon worm looks like something straight out of a sci-fi movie — and when it attacks, it genuinely gives Venom vibes. Ribbon worms (phylum Nemertea) are long, slimy, stretchy marine worms that can range from a few inches to over 100 feet long in rare cases. At first glance, they look harmless — thin, smooth, and often brightly colored in reds, oranges, browns, or deep purples. Some are so flat and glossy they almost look like living ribbons drifting through the water. But the wild part? The

Global Sports Hub on Instagram: "This is a ribbon worm, known for its unique hunting method. When threatened or capturing prey, it ejects a proboscis that looks like branching white roots. This proboscis is used to entangle and immobilize its target before feeding. Though it appears shocking, it is a natural defense and hunting mechanism found in many species of ribbon worms. #RibbonWorm #MarineBiology #WildlifeFacts #NatureEducation #AnimalBehavior #OceanLife #NatureDiscovery #ScienceFacts #Cur

medical / biology explain on Instagram: "“Did you know the Ribbon Worm (often called the Robben Worm) has a secret weapon? 🪱🔬 It uses a structure called a proboscis — a long, tube-like organ that it shoots out with lightning speed to catch its prey. Sometimes this proboscis can stretch several times the worm’s own body length! The tip is coated with sticky mucus, trapping the prey instantly before digestion begins. 👾 This hidden attack makes the Ribbon Worm one of nature’s sneakiest predators
