Check out this huge mesquite tree! The Great Mesquite is estimated to be over 200 years old and has the distinction of being one of the "great trees of the old Pueblo." These landmark trees, serve as living historical links to the region's frontier, indigenous, and natural history. The nutritious seed pods ripen in late summer and provide a vital source of food for wildlife. Mesquite bark is used to make baskets, fabric, and medicine. If only trees could talk, I bet it has some stories over 200

Mesquite pods are a tasty, nutrient-packed desert food that has nourished Indigenous communities for millennia. Most notably to our region, the Tohono O’odham continue this tradition today through community harvests at spaces like San Xavier Co-Op Farm. ➡️ @fonz_520 gives us a quick lesson on how these pods are gathered and transformed into delicious desert snacks. 🌿 Want to learn more about Tucson’s native ingredients? Mesquite pod meal - demo of historical method. 🌳This is just a small amount for demonstration purposes, but mesquite pod meal was the most important wild food resource among Indigenous peoples in the Southwest, and this is the basic method used by dozens of tribes. 🌳Note that I don't have the best baskets for this purpose, and historically, Natives made baskets specifically for the various stages of this preparation. I just used whatever I had on hand to serve as crude sieves. 🌳The mesquite p

Honey mesquite bean pod gathering technique The shake 'n rake technique has the advantages of 1) getting only fully mature pods, which are the sweetest and easiest to grind up, 2) allowing one to gather from the highest branches, 3) avoiding the thorns when plucking directly from trees, and 4) quickly dropping a lot on a small area. #foraging #ethnobotany #forager #foragetexas #wildedibles #wildedibleplants #wildfood #wildfruits #survivalfood #survival #survivalskills #primitiveskills #primitive

Retama (Parkinsonia aculeata) is another arid/desert tree that produces edible beans. Like mesquite, the beans inside the seedpods are extremely hard and generally ground with rocks then boiled into a mush. Young, tender pods are also edible but I personally haven't been able to harvest any to try. A cool thing about this that during times of extreme heat/drought Retama will drop its leaves but continue to photosynthesize using the chlorophyll in its beautiful (albeit thorny) green bark. #forage
