Lilacs are often neglected, they get overgrown and really only bloom at the top. To get a fuller shape with more blooms the plant should be a shrub about 8-12 feet tall as opposed to a small tree. Trunks wider than about 2 inches can be removed completely and you can leave 10-12 small suckers off the bottom that will become your new trunks.
