This is the process of collaring the top so that it is smaller. It’s important to support the inside of the pot as the clay is coming in and also that support allows the clay to be thinned out so that it doesn’t just buckle. There are people who can do this magically with one hand, squeezing the clay between the fingers at exactly the right amount so that they can just bring the clay in however they want.
