Made over 1,900 years ago, this statue of the god Anubis is attributed to the Roman period, and was discovered in 1749 at Villa Pamphilj in Anzio. Carved from Parian marble, it depicts Anubis with the head of a jackal, a small solar disc on a crescent moon between his ears, dressed in a short tunic, cloak, and shoes, and holding a caduceus. It measures 155 × 50 × 28 cm (61 × 20 × 11 in). This artifact is now housed at the Gregorian Egyptian Museum in Vatican City. It was donated to Pope Benedict
