Il y a 140 ans était éxecuté le métis franco-américain et franco-manitobain Louis Riel. Louis Riel a été pendu le 16 novembre 1885 à Regina pour haute trahison, suite à la Rébellion du Nord-Ouest de 1885. Il était reconnu comme le chef de ce soulèvement métis, qui visait à protester contre les empiètements des colons et le manque de reconnaissance des droits des Métis par le gouvernement canadien. Louis Riel: traitor or hero?

On this day in 1885, Louis Riel’s casket was carried six miles from his mother’s house to St. Boniface, Manitoba, where he was laid to rest. He had been executed earlier on November 16 in Regina after being tried for high treason and his participation in the resistance to Canadian encroachment on Métis lands. Today the Métis Nation of Alberta continues to fight for the protection of Métis rights and seeks to honour his devotion and legacy. In honour of the journey Riel’s remains took on the back
