Erik Fender, Than Tsideh “Sunbird”, was born in 1970 into the San Ildefonso Pueblo. He was born into an illustrious potting family; his great-aunt was the legendary Maria Martinez. At age 10, Eric began creating pottery with his mother Martha Appleleaf and grandmother Carmelita Dunlap, watching her as she would hand coil and hand paint her traditional black-on-black pottery. At the age of 17 he won an award in a Congressional Art competition. His style progressed from the traditional black-on-bl

This wedding vase was made by San Ildefonso potter Maria Martinez and it’s a wonderful piece. The wedding vase itself was a very popular form factor for Pueblo artists, Maria just didn’t make many of them. To see one of these pots made so skillfully by the master Pueblo potter Maria and painted by her husband Julian is a special thing and I’m happy to have it in my Pueblo pottery auction happening now. Lots begin to close at 12:00 PM on Friday, June 21, 2024. Visit our website to learn more (lin

This San Ildefonso double-lobed polychrome canteen is from the 1860s and it’s a really amazing piece of Pueblo pottery. The canteen has the sensibility and shape of a gourd and is painted with images of clouds and plant life. It highlights how important the Pueblo’s agricultural identity was and was probably used to collect rainwater so it’s a great example of art and utility meeting somewhere in the middle and it’s currently on display at the Met. The exhibit is called Grounded in Clay and its

The @heardmuseum has an amazing exhibition of the master San Ildefonso potter Maria Martinez. This exhibit is called Maria & Modernism and it highlights the creative journey of Maria and her family members that she often collaborated with. On display are some of Maria’s most monumental works and the number of pieces under one roof is just astounding. If you’re in the Phoenix area I highly encourage stopping by the Heard Museum to see this amazing collection of master potter Maria Martinez. #mari

Blackware pottery - created by Pueblo artists of the Southwest - emerged from a centuries old firing technique that transforms red clay into a deep mirror like black material. Artists like Maria and Julian Martinez of San Ildefonso Pueblo mastered this technique and helped bring it to market in the early 20th Century, creating pieces that are highly sought after by collectors. It is currently known as one of the most iconic expressions of Native American ceramic artistry. | Briggs Auction, Inc.

This large clay bear figure is just magnificent. It was made by San Ildefonso artist Tony Da in the 1970s and has an immense amount of artistry poured into it. He inlaid Morenci turquoise and heishi beads, as well as an arrowhead on the top. A piece this size and in this great of shape is incredibly rare to come by and I’m happy to have it in my Pueblo Pottery auction happening now. Lots begin to close on June 21, 2024 at 12:00 PM. "Using traditional materials and Pueblo pottery techniques, along with various printmaking techniques, I feel that it is important to keep alive the ceramic traditions that have been passed down to me since time immemorial. I feel that these materials and techniques connect me to my ancestral past and landscape, but also connect myself and future generations to our Tewa cultural traditions.” — Jason Garcia (Okuu Pín), Santa Clara Pueblo (K’haP’o Owingeh) Native North America Gallery opens Novemb

Every piece of pottery by Russell Sanchez displays a distinctive flair. He learned the techniques of traditional San Ildefonso Pueblo pottery making from his aunt, renowned potter Rose Gonzales. San Idelfonso is known for its black on black pottery, but Sanchez has created his own individual style by continually exploring new colors, shapes and designs. Often he embeds native materials such as strands of turquoise or Heishi Shell beads and larger turquoise stones in the clay, or created borders

Tony Da is one of the most prolific Pueblo potters to ever live and these 4 pieces are a testament to his skill and sense of design. He was the son of renown San Ildefonso artist and Governor, Popovi Da, and was the grandson of the legendary potter Maria Martinez. He worked with both his father and grandmother in the 1960s and ended up winning numerous awards very early on in his career. Unfortunately, Tony was in a terrible motorcycle accident and stopped producing pottery in 1982 after only 15
