Today is World Poetry Day, a day to celebrate poets and promote the teaching of poetry. Poetry is an important part of Eritrean culture. Eritrean poetry includes the ‘masse’, used in social gatherings, and ‘woye’ or ‘melkes’, written for mourning. Although it marked a truly sad occasion, the Embassy community was recently blessed with the recital of a beautiful “woye” poem, written in English written by Embassy employee Ms. Netsenet Tewelde, read recently on the occasion of the memorial service
