Meet the comb jelly The comb jelly is a beautiful, oval-shaped animal with eight rows of tiny comblike plates that it beats to move itself through the water. As it swims, the comb rows break up (diffract) light to produce a shimmering rainbow effect#wildlife #nature #marinelife #ocean | Kaikoura Kayaks

This remarkable rainbow comb jelly, called Cestum, has snared a small shrimp like creature as prey. Unlike jellyfish, comb jellies do not have stinging cells. Instead, they have sticky cells on gossamer tentacles. Cestum holds these tentacles close to its body, using its flat surface like a net covered in glue. Luckily for its prey, it was able to make an escape, a little sticky, but living to fight another day. . 🎥 by the amazing @aquatilis_expedition on Installation . #marinebiology #marinesc

The Bloodbelly comb jelly may look like it is lit up like a holiday display, but the truth is a bit more complicated! Info via @montereybayaquarium: The sparkling display is light diffracting and refracting off tiny hairlike cilia that propel the jelly. Scientists think its red belly helps mask bioluminescent light from prey it eats: a predator with a glowing gut could easily become prey! | Schmidt Ocean Institute

This comb jelly was spotted along the Dorset coast recently. Despite appearances, these aren't jellyfish and they don't possess stinging cells. Comb jellies get their name from the rows of comb-like structures called cilia along their body. In order to propel themselves through the water, they move the cilia back and forth. As they swim along, the cilia refract light giving off a stunning rainbow effect 🌈 Have you ever seen a comb jelly? Let us know ~ Sarah 🎥 © Sarah Hodgson | Dorset Wildlife

Creature Feature! This is a comb jelly. It has rows of tiny fused hairs called cilia that help it move through the water. These cilia scatter the light and create a sparkly, colorful effect similar to a rainbow that we can see as they move through the water! ✨🌈 Comb jellies do not have stinging cells, and are made up of 95% water. They are also carnivorous! Do you have more comb jelly fun facts? Drop them in the comments! #combjelly #indianriverlagoon #loveourlagoon #lovetheirl | Marine Resourc

Comb Jelly at St Brides Haven, Look carefully...Can you spot the flashes of light 😊 Comb jellies, also known as ctenophores, are marine invertebrates that swim using eight rows of comb-like plates of cilia called "ctenes". These plates beat in a rhythmic, wavelike motion, causing the jelly to move and creating a shimmering, rainbow-like effect as they refract light. No, this is not a deep-sea disco ball… 🪩🕺 A ctenophore (or comb jelly) seen during one of the #DiagnosingDeepCoral ROV dives today. Comb jellies are the largest animals to swim with the help of cilia - the small hairlike structures that run along the length of their bodies. While it appears the cilia are changing color or ‘flashing lights,’ they are actually refracting the light from the ROV to create the mesmerizing rainbow effect seen here. It is not bioluminescence.
