🚂 Remember The Grid? The Mighty Class 56 Locomotive ⚙️ In the golden age of British Rail freight, the Class 56 was the workhorse of the network—hauling coal, steel, and heavy loads with over 3,250 horsepower of diesel thunder. Nicknamed “The Grid” because of its iconic horn grille, this beast powered the UK’s industrial heart through the '70s, '80s and beyond. 💥 But did you know the first 30 were built in Romania... and nearly doomed the whole class due to poor construction? 🇬🇧 It wasn’t unt

🚆 The Mighty Class 56 🚆 The British Rail Class 56 was built for one job — heavy freight — and it did it exceptionally well. Introduced in the mid-1970s, the Class 56 marked a bold new chapter for British Rail, being one of the first diesel locomotives designed specifically for modern, high-powered freight operations. With its distinctive angular body, powerful Ruston engine, and unmistakable growl, the Class 56 quickly became synonymous with coal trains, steel traffic, and long, hard-working f

Once the loco was running we started to look at other jobs. Taking a coolant sample Starting to prepare the cabs for restoration to near 1976 condition. Removal of the TPWS gear in #1 cab. Work can start over the winter in preparing the cabs for a full repaint. | The Class 56 Group

Another visit today and we started the loco up again and checked it got the brake pipe up and then took power both directions in both cabs. After running for an hour or so we started to prepare the tarpaulin to go over the roof at No 2 end. We shut the engine down , put the covers back on the start relays and pulled the tarp up and over the roof and secured it ti the loco body. We then took all 9 electronic modules out of the electronics rack for warm storage. We will continue to visit the loco
