Understanding the nature of the seed is key. Lentils, for example, have a strong food reserve and can handle that bit of extra depth. While we aim for a quick emergence, pushing sowing depth from 30 mm to 40 mm can make a huge difference in reducing chemical effect. Early in the season it was tricky, with dry soil making every millimetre count.
