Bob Laemmle, who headed the family-owned chain of Los Angeles art house theaters that bears the name of the founder of Universal Pictures, died Thursday. He was 89.

Robert Laemmle, who took over from his father, co-founder Max Laemmle, would eventually hand over the beloved local art-house chain to his son Greg.

Bob Laemmle was born in Paris and came with his parents to the U.S. in 1938. He graduated from Marshall High School, Cal State L.A. and received an MBA from UCLA. Laemmle Theatres was established in 1938 by Bob Laemmle’s father Max and Kurt Laemmle,
