The Oklahoma Sooners were too reliant on John Mateer on Saturday in the Cotton Bowl. They need to be more committed to running the football.

With quarterback John Mateer not quite his usual self in his first game back after September hand surgery, the No. 6 Sooners were held to 258 total yards in a 23-6 loss to archrival Texas on Saturday, Oct. 11 in the Red River Rivalry at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.

On Saturday, the sixth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners lost 23-6 to the Texas Longhorns in the Red River Rivalry. For the third time in four years under head coach Brent Venables, Oklahoma failed to score a touchdown against its biggest rival. The Sooners are now 1-3 against Texas under Venables.

Oklahoma coach Brent Venables has turned things around after a tough season last year. The Sooners are now ranked sixth and are in the College Football Playoff hunt.

Coach Patty Gasso and the OU softball team will continue their fall exhibition schedule on Friday with Game 2 of the Oklahoma Battle Series.

Until they left for the Southeastern Conference, OU was an unstoppable force in the Big 12 Conference for a quarter-century.
