California has challenged the administration's move to call up the National Guard over the objections of Governor Gavin Newsom.

Over the years, Trump has threatened to intercede in the state’s long-running homeless crisis, vowed to withhold federal wildfire aid as political leverage in a dispute over water rights, called on police to shoot people robbing stores and warned residents “your children are in danger” because of illegal immigration.

What the judge rules, and the likely appeals that follow, may alter decades of understanding about the roles of governors and the White House in quelling domestic unrest.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said anti-ICE protesters in Los Angeles who engage in violence will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

President Donald Trump unlawfully federalized thousands of members of California’s National Guard and must return control of the troops to the state, a federal judge ruled Thursday.

Newsom filed a lawsuit Monday in response to Trump ordering the deployment of roughly 4,000 National Guard members to Los Angeles following protests over his stepped-up enforcement of immigration laws. They were originally called in to protect federal buildings, and the president later ordered the deployment of 700 Marines.

While protests Wednesday were relatively peaceful, some turned into scenes of chaos as police fired with less lethal munitions to the disperse crowds.

Newsom offered a brief yet blistering summary of his talk with the president just before he deployed the National Guard to protests in Los Angeles.
