$30 million for food banks part of Nevada’s plan for SNAP relief as shutdown continues
Nevada is preparing to spend $30 million to provide help to SNAP recipients as federal funds dry up in the ongoing government shutdown. The money would fund assistance through Three Square, Southern Nevada's food bank,
Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo says the National Guard has been deployed in the state to assist with food bank distribution efforts.
The Reno-Sparks Gospel mission provides free meals to homeless or food insecure people in Northern Nevada. Its staff prepares as many as 1,300 meals each day and serves breakfast and dinner to any individual or family off the streets, and provides groceries to hundreds of people each week.
On Saturday, the day SNAP benefits officially froze, Lantrip said the Food Bank held three mobile distribution sites. At its warehouse on Oddie Boulevard in Reno, more than 500 families showed up for boxes of food. It was similar at the other two locations.
