Trump stopped a program that had been in the works and was intended to give Medicare recipients access to more than 100 generic drugs for $2 a month, according to another executive order signed on Trump's first day in his new term.

An early move by the president has raised questions about what direction his second-term policy on drug costs will take.

The U.S. government said on Wednesday it will aim for "greater transparency" in Medicare drug price negotiations under President Donald Trump's administration following criticism from the pharmaceutical industry for the Biden-era law.

Trump rescinded Executive Order 14087, "Lowering Prescription Drug Costs for Americans," which directed Medicare and Medicaid agencies to research and implement models for lowering the costs of prescription drugs. Separate provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 also aimed at lower prescription drug costs are still in effect.

The U.S. government said on Wednesday it will consider opportunities to "bring greater transparency" for the Medicare drug price negotiation program under President Donald Trump's administration. The price negotiation process was established under former President Joe Biden's signature Inflation Reduction Act in 2022.

On its last weekday in power, the Biden Administration has chosen the next batch of drugs up for price negotiation in Medicare.

The Biden administration said Medicare will negotiate discounts with drug companies on 15 drugs prescribed to treat cancer, diabetes and asthma.

Drugmakers raised the list prices of more than 800 prescription drugs for blood pressure, cancer and other conditions by a median 4% at the start of this year.The modest size of the annual increases could help companies avoid criticism of gouging from President Trump while seeking his administration’s support for such priorities as taking aim at the rebates given to middlemen and altering a federal program providing discounts to certain hospitals.

A short statement from CMS said the agency will consider ways to make Medicare price negotiations, begun under Biden, more transparent.
