Sometimes it's so cold that it requires a watch or warning from the National Weather Service. The terms for those advisories have changed. Here's why.
Now, they are being called cold weather advisories and extreme cold warnings. The old criteria for wind chill advisories were for forecast wind chills ranging from 10 to 24 degrees below zero.
The National Weather Service has simplified some of its winter weather alerts for Wind Chill and Extreme Cold Warnings.
Starting this year, the weather alerts used to express the danger of cold air will change.
Starting with the 2024-2025 winter season, the terms will be replaced with different ways to describe dangerous cold conditions. Wind chill cold alerts have been retired.
