BREMERTON — The Navy has sold the former USS Kitty Hawk and USS John F. Kennedy to a Texas shipbreaking company to scrap the aging, defunct aircraft carriers, according to Naval Sea Systems Command.

The USS John F Kennedy is a nuclear-powered ship and is expected to enter service in the US Navy in 2020. On May 29, 2019, the aircraft carrier's 588 metric ton island was landed.

The USS John F. Kennedy was commissioned in 1968 and saw service over four decades. Yates was its first captain and molded the initial crew at the height of the Cold War.
