Flora Yukhnovich and François Boucher’s work in dialogue. Courtesy The Wallace Collection. Louis XV’s mistress, Madame de Pompadour, was a formidable patron of the arts.

Boucher painted those six works — most of them measuring about 9 feet-by-6½ feet — for the Hotel Bergeret de Frouville in Paris about a year before he died on May 30, 1770.

François Boucher was the near-perfect embodiment of the rococo spirit. He painted several likenesses of Madame de Pompadour and, thanks to her influence, he became court painter to Louis XV.

Yukhnovich’s paintings will temporarily replace two works by Boucher at the top of the grand staircase on the landing of Hertford House, which houses the collection, from June to October.
