Georgians are feeling major impacts Friday morning from Hurricane Helene as it swept rapidly across Georgia during the overnight hours. The storm left many in south Georgia with damage and without power and it continues to impact the north half of the state.

WHEELER COUNTY, Ga. (AP) - Two people have died after a possible tornado struck a mobile home in south Georgia on Thursday night, Wheeler County Sheriff Randy Rigdon told WMAZ-TV. The damage was reported as heavy thunderstorms from Hurricane Helene raked much of the state. Wheeler County is about 70 miles (113 kilometers) southeast of Macon.

Hurricane Helene plowed ashore in Florida's Big Bend area as a monster-size Category 4 storm. It weakened Friday morning to tropical strength with winds at 70 mph, but surge waters remain deadly.

A tornado threat persists through Friday morning. According to the National Hurricane Center, Helene made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane at 11:10 p.m. Thursday near Perry, Fla. As of 1 a.m., the hurricane was moving with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph. It is moving north-northeast at 24 mph.

Hurricane Helene isn’t only expected to damage homes and vehicles; it has already resulted in at least 6 deaths and one injury, with more fatalities and injuries anticipated.

The National Weather Service issued a Tornado Watch for all Northeast Florida, Southeast Georgia until 10 p.m.

Helene came ashore amid warnings from the National Hurricane Center that the enormous system could create a “nightmare” storm surge. There were at least four storm-related deaths. More than 2 million customers in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas were in the dark as Helene moved inland from the Big Bend area of Florida's Gulf Coast.
