This story has been updated to include information about roads reopening. U.S. 441/Newfound Gap Road between Gatlinburg and Cherokee, North Carolina and several other roads within Great Smoky Mountains National Park are closed to traffic due to snow and ice.

Cold temperatures are forecast to linger in East Tennessee throughout the week. Snow showers moved across the higher elevations with up to at least five inches, according to the National Weather Service in Morristown.

The National Park Service has closed Newfound Gap Road and Foothills Parkway West in the Great Smoky Mountains due to snow.

Ahead of the weekend's forecast winter weather, U.S. 441/Newfound Gap Road between Gatlinburg, Tennessee and Cherokee, North Carolina, is closed in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The road closed at 8 a.m. Jan. 3. There has been no announcement from the National Park Service when Newfound Gap Road could open again.

The announcement came from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which added that the mountains could see wind gusts as fast as 70 mph. The road reopened Saturday morning, but the park said it will close again at 5 p.m. Saturday for a high wind warning.

The Gatlinburg Bypass and Cherokee Orchard Road at Twin Creeks have been closed Wednesday due to snow and ice. A few house later, the National Park service announced that Little River Road/Fighting Creek Gap Road between the Sugarlands Visitor Center and Metcalf Bottoms is also closing temporarily because of snow.
