Gov. Gavin Newsom will visit Los Angeles on Thursday to announce an effort to redraw the state’s congressional districts — countering a similar move in Texas.

Districts are normally redrawn every 10 years, based on updated census data. The districts drawn under the midcensus redistricting plan would be in effect for the 2026, 2028 and 2030 federal elections, after which California would return to its prior system.

Governor Gavin Newsom plans to propose a mid-decade redistricting plan to counter Texas. This would be the first time in the country's history that a state has ever done a redistricting plan where they let voters decide.
