Acting President Choi Sang-mok reaffirmed his neutrality on Tuesday, resisting political pressure from the Democratic Party (DP) as it moves to prosecute him over the failure to arrest impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok became on Friday South Korea's second acting president in two weeks, as lawmakers voted to impeach the current acting leader, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, fuelling political uncertainty in Asia's fourth-largest economy.

South Korean investigators urged the acting president to enforce an arrest warrant for impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, after a six-hour standoff where security forces blocked the arrest. The warrant relates to Yoon's recent martial law declaration.

Investigators failed to take Yoon Suk Yeol into custody following a standoff with the presidential security service last week.

South Korea's acting President Choi Sang-mok said on Tuesday he would immediately move to fill vacancies on the Constitutional Court in a effort to restore stability after the impeachment of two of his predecessors this month triggered political turmoil.

The president was suspended from his duties last month following a failed bid to impose martial law and his subsequent impeachment by parliament on December 14. Law enforcement authorities are seeking Yoon’s arrest as part of an investigation into alleged treason and abuse of power.

Both supporters and protesters staged rallies near the residence of South Korea's impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol on Sunday, a day before an arrest warrant for him expires. On the day, conservative groups supporting Yoon and labor groups which hold opposing views called on the public to gather outside the presidential residence.

South Korean investigators on Saturday again asked the country’s acting president to clear the way for the arrest of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol after a six-hour standoff earlier this week thwarted his detainment.
