Thomas, who was twice a WNBA finalist with the Sun, is yet to win a championship despite consistently being one of the most productive players in the league. New teammate Sabally is also likely to share the same motivation as Thomas, with Copper being the only one amongst the Mercury's new big three to have tasted championship success in the past.

In search of its fourth championship, the Phoenix Mercury has overhauled its roster, headlined by the acquisition of star forward Alyssa Thomas. Thomas forms a star-studded big three as the franchise enters uncharted territory post-Diana Taurasi.

Plans for the Mercury’s future started to come to light last offseason. In February 2024, they acquired Copper, the 2021 WNBA Finals MVP and multi-time All-Star, from the Chicago Sky. She had led the Sky to the title over the Mercury.
