Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson and Interim City Manager Kimberly Tolbert said they are going to focus on finding a new police chief to achieve the goal of making Dallas a safer city.

Police leaders say Chief Eddie García’s impact can’t be reduced to a single event in Dallas. In his more than three years here, he oversaw drops in arrests for lower-level offenses, reckoned with pyramid promotional schemes involving his officers and created a new constitutional policing unit.

The hope is the chief will help usher transformation to the Austin Police Department and have the same type of impact as he has had on the Dallas community.
