Democrat Laura Gillen has defeated U.S. Rep. Anthony D’Esposito in a congressional race on Long Island, flipping a third House seat in New York for Democrats to partially reverse a red wave that washed over suburban and rural parts of the state during the last election.

Gillen’s win puts a dent into Republicans’ recent gains across Long Island. Last year, Republicans won the Suffolk County executive seat. And D’Esposito’s 2022 victory flipped a seat that Democrats had held for nearly three decades.

The battle for New York’s undecided voters centered on two races on Long Island, two in parts of the Hudson Valley and one in central New York. Freshman Republicans who mostly won by slim margins in the 2022 midterms faced well-funded Democrats who had the added advantage of a presidential candidate on the top of the ticket.
