Xbox beta tests support for massive amounts of external storage
Xbox has a new beta software update rolling out today for Insiders in the Alpha Skip-Ahead ring that enables Series X and S systems to support much larger external hard disks. Previously, the Xbox could only support up to 16TB of space on a single USB-connected drive.

Members of the Xbox Insider Program can now use hard drives larger than 16TB, giving them vastly more storage space to keep even more games.
Xbox Series X Will Soon Work With External Drives As Big As 16 TB
As explained in this FAQ, the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S will work with any storage device, as long as it uses the USB3.1 protocol and has a minimum of 128 GB in storage. The difference in using these official cards is that they are optimized to get the best performance for games on the console.
