The U.S. Senate on Wednesday confirmed a former clerk to conservative Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and the late Antonin Scalia to serve as a judge on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
Republicans on the Senate Judicial Confirmation Committee move Gov. Spencer Cox's nominee to the Utah Supreme Court to the full Senate for a vote later this month.
Alabama Supreme Court Justice Bill Lewis has been appointed to serve as a federal judge in the Middle District of Alabama. The U.S. Senate voted 58-40 on Oct. 27 to confirm the appointment, said U.S. Sen. Katie Britt, R-Alabama.
Voters will decide whether three justices who were elected as Democrats keep their seats for another 10-year term.
David Wecht, one of three Democratic justices facing up-or-down retention votes Tuesday, told NBC News that "it's extremely hard to work with a shorthanded court."
