Lego Horizon Adventures is a funny platformer that avoids adapting the source material’s complex lore and opts for simple, repetitive levels that become tiresome quickly. However, despite heartfelt vocal performances and beautiful world design, Lego Horizon Adventures fails to reach its full potential.

Lego Horizon Adventures is, first and foremost, a game about fighting bad guys. At first, Aloy can only shoot at human cultists with a basic bow. But the game gradually layers on more simple, entertaining additions until the combat becomes a zippy delight.

Via bricks and minifigs, Horizon is charmingly remade for a younger audience, though its formulaic missions may strain players of all ages.

Playing (with) Lego doesn’t have to be pure escapism. In telling Horizon’s story of environmental collapse and capitalism gone wild, Lego Horizon Adventures puts a layer of kid-friendly plastic building block abstraction between the concepts and the increasingly inevitable reality. And that makes it not only manageable, but also shareable.

Too simple and childish for adults, and too one-note to convert the kids, Lego Horizon Adventures does little to recommend it to Horizon fans or newcomers.
