Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued for Hawaiian island of Kauai
A cold front dragging across the Hawaiian islands on Thursday will bring some potentially severe thunderstorms, hail and damaging winds. A low crossing the islands will bring more rain, and even snow to higher elevations through Friday afternoon.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for the island of Kauai. At 6:42 a.m., radar showed a severe thunderstorm was located 6 miles south of Eleele, moving northeast at 40 mph and headed toward southeast Kauai.

The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the County of Kaua‘i. The warning may be extended, dropped or modified as conditions develop. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning means a severe thunderstorm is imminent.
Kauai struggles with power outages amid Severe Thunderstorm Warning
According to the KIUC, 30,000 customers lost power around midnight on Wednesday. The outages are believed to be caused by gusty winds. Wind gusts have been clocked at 25-45 mph. Southwest winds don’t need much strength to cause damage trees and power poles are not used to it and not braced for it.
