WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH)—Kansas lawmakers will once again debate a bill to ban gender-affirming care for minors. The bill is similar to one Kansas Governor Laura Kelly vetoed last year. Republicans came up one vote short of overriding that veto, and similar laws have been implemented across the U.S.

Lawmakers in Kansas continue to discuss a potential ban on gender-affirming care for Kansans under 18, also know as the “Help Not Harm Act.”

As promised, Kansas Republicans are trying again to ban gender-affirming care for transgender youths after last year's bill was vetoed.

Kansas lawmakers are trying to ban gender-affirming care for minors after several failed attempts. The proposal would ban puberty blockers, hormone treatments and gender-affirming surgeries, which are rare.

The Kansas bill prohibits health care providers from providing gender transition care to children who want to change from their biological sex. Providers could not give children puberty blockers, hormone therapy, or surgery. If they did, it would be considered unprofessional conduct, and they could be sued.

Identical bills in the Kansas House and Senate are attempting to ban gender-affirming care for minors in a renewed effort from Republicans to clamp down on transgender youths’ health care.

In packed hearings Tuesday at the Kansas Statehouse, lawmakers heard testimony on legislation that would bar doctors from prescribing puberty blockers, hormone replacement therapy and other gender-affirming medical care to transgender minors.
