A transportation nonprofit in San Antonio has said it is reviewing its street art safety project amid a larger push from Texas Governor Greg Abbott to remove “political ideologies” from streets.

He threatened to withhold road funding from cities and counties if they do not remove “political ideologies” from their streets.

On Wednesday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott directed the Texas Department of Transportation to withhold funding from cities and counties that do not remove "political ideologies," a thinly veiled threat that mirrors both the Trump administration and the state of Florida's crusade against rainbow crosswalks.

"This is an assault on the federal government simply trying to enforce the law," Gov. Abbott told CBS News Texas in an interview.

Following an order from the U.S. Department of Transportation calling for the removal of rainbow-painted crosswalks and other “distracting” road markings, Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered the state’s DOT to ensure the removal of these and other non-standard road markings that, according to the governor, promote political ideologies.

The order appears to target rainbow crosswalks specifically, in cities like Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and Houston, which have installed them in recent years.

Texas Governor Abbott activates additional resources and updates the disaster declaration due to wildfire and flood risks.

Officials with the city of Galveston confirmed Friday that crews were removing two rainbow crosswalks to avoid losing state transportation funding.
