Valentine's Day is here again, and while some people are spending it with their partner, others might be getting unknowingly scammed online. Federal agencies and tech companies are sounding the alarm on "romance scammers," many of whom live overseas and use the promise of a romantic encounter to lure in Americans.

Rebecca D’Antonio, a romance scam victim who lost $100,000 to a scammer she met on OKCupid, a dating website she thought was trustworthy, found the reporting process to be “impersonal, granular, and triggering,” she said in an interview with ConsumerAffairs.

Good cybersecurity will help keep you safe. As always, set good passwords, use two-factor authentication and make sure your antivirus software, operating systems and apps are all up to date. These basic practices will go a long way toward protecting you if you click on or download something you shouldn't.
