With Marcus Mariota dealing with a pair of injuries, the Commanders are leaning towards starting Josh Johnson on Christmas Day.
The quarterback position has been unpredictable for the Washington Commanders this season. After a strong performance last year, fans were looking forward to seeing Jayden Daniels under center, but a string of injuries has kept him off the field, leaving veteran Marcus Mariota to step in.
As they prepare to play on a short week, the Commanders are adding depth under center. Jeff Driskel is being signed off the Cardinals’ practice squad, per veteran reporter Ben Standig. The move is now official.
Elsewhere on the ex-Bronco front, guard Netane Muti was cut from the Detroit Lions ' practice squad, the Los Angeles Chargers signed running back Royce Freeman to their practice squad and the New England Patriots cut practice squad offensive lineman Sebastian Gutierrez.
The Panthers traded up to select Johnson with the 80th overall pick of the 2023 draft. Their jump saw them send their third-rounder (93rd overall) and a fourth-rounder (132nd overall) to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson (calf) did not practice on Wednesday. He played only 27 of 92 snaps in the Christmas Day win over the Commanders. For the season, Ferguson has 81 receptions for 595 yards and eight touchdowns.
