A decade-old picture of a Philippine city flattened by Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest storms ever recorded, has resurfaced in social media posts that falsely portrayed it as showing the damage caused by Typhoon Yagi in Vietnam.

Typhoon Yagi claimed the lives of 21 people in Vietnam while killing four people on the southern Chinese island of Hainan and 20 in the Philippines.

In Vietnam, nine people died when the typhoon made landfall Saturday, and at least 55 others have died during the floods and landslides that followed.

Old photos from a super typhoon that hit the Philippines a decade ago have been shared by social media users in Myanmar that falsely claimed it showed the aftermath of Typhoon Yagi, which slammed into several Asian countries and left more than 200 dead i 2024.

It caused high-rise buildings to shake, windows to smash, trucks to overturn, and trees falling and homes collapsing

Yagi triggered landslides and widespread flooding in the Philippines earlier in the week before striking north Vietnam on Saturday.

Typhoons also tend to weaken once they hit land and this was the case for Yagi. However, as per Reuters, the storm has caused the death of at least 82 people and 64 people are currently missing at the time of reporting, with 752 people having been injured.

Vietnam is preparing for more flooding with a tropical depression forecast to strengthen into a storm as it heads to its central coast, days after typhoon Yagi set off floods and landslides that killed more than 290 people in the north.
