New York City’s public transportation agency will delay a planned fare and toll increase to January, just as the bus, train and subway operator terminates its longstanding MetroCard for a tap-and-go payment system.

The MTA will raise New York City’s subway and bus fares to $3 on Jan. 4, MTA officials announced on Wednesday during the agency’s monthly board meeting. The MTA will fully transition to the OMNY tap-to-pay system as of next year and in doing so will eliminate the 30-day unlimited fare option riders can currently purchase for MetroCards.
