Minneapolis' City Council voted on Monday to agree to systemic reforms to its police department and to submit the department to outside oversight after a U.S. federal investigation spurred by the 2020 murder of George Floyd uncovered a pattern of civil rights abuses.

The City Council went into closed session for about seven hours Monday to go through the details of a consent decree, a legally binding agreement to reform policing.

The Minneapolis City Council has approved a deal between the city and the U.S. Department of Justice. The deal may bring expansive police reforms to the city. It comes five years after the murder of George Floyd sparked outrage in Minneapolis and around the world.
