Canada's governing Liberal Party will announce the country's new prime minister March 9 after a leadership vote following Justin Trudeau's resignation.

Justin Trudeau, who has led the country for nearly a decade, is giving up leadership of the Liberal party. He said he would remain in both roles until his replacement had been chosen through a party election.

(Reuters) -Outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party said late on Thursday it will choose a new leader on March 9 ahead of the 2025 elections for which polls show the party in a very weak position.

The front runners for the Liberal leadership are former central banker Mark Carney and ex-Finance Minster Chrystia Freeland, whose abrupt resignation last month forced Trudeau's exit.

Christy Clark, the former premier of British Columbia, abandoned a possible bid to replace Justin Trudeau, further narrowing the field for Canada’s next Liberal Party leader and prime minister.

Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said he is not going to enter the race to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the Liberal leader. He says he will focus on ensuring the federal government is ready to protect Canadian industry from the trade threats posed by president-elect Donald Trump.
