At least 17 people have died, and eight remain missing, after torrential rains triggered flash floods and landslides across Indonesia's Java island. Flash floods and landslides during Indonesia's rainy season frequently lead to devastating loss of life and infrastructure damage.

Torrential rains Monday caused rivers to burst their banks, tearing through villages in Central Java province, as mud, rocks and trees tumbled down on mountainside hamlets.

In December, 10 people were killed in flash floods that hit hilly villages on the country’s main island of Java. In the previous month, flash floods and landslides in North Sumatra province killed at least 29 people.
