New York Democrats flipped a third US House seat after expensive and acrimonious races.The state serves as a bright spot as Democrats struggle nationwide to regain a majority in the chamber that would provide a check on the incoming administration of Donald Trump and the Republican-controlled Senate.

Democrat Laura Gillen has won the election in New York’s 4th Congressional District, beating incumbent Republican Rep. Anthony D’Esposito. The swing district covers southwest and central Nassau County.
