You don’t. You can reach out to the local Grotto or ask. The owner just collects the fee and maintains camping area.

Reach out to your local grotto. There is no special permits beyond paying $8 a person and respecting the land.

They can modify the route to some degree, but I used my arms & hands a LOT to brace myself on slippery slopes. My shoulders were super sore the next day from all the weight I'd put on them throughout the trek. I would really worry about an injured arm significantly increasing his risk of falls and further injury.
