It is neither recommended nor based on the convenience of your time. In fact, it is mandatory to visit this temple for recording your attendance to Lord Jagannath temple of Puri otherwise as per Shastras your visit to Lord Jagannath temple will be null and void. Of course, if you are thinking in modern and contemporary terms, it is not required and you will be saved from the hassles of those pandas out to do anything to get money from you. Decision is yours. There is a saying in Hinduism/Hindi "Maano to bhagwaan nahi to patthar". So, if you are visiting Jagannath temple, it means you believe in god and you are a believer of this faith. Therefore, if you believe in Jagannath temple, you must follow all Jagannath's protocols and visit Sakshi Gopal temple come what may. Rest decision is yours. India is a democratic country. No one is forcing you. I think I covered all opinions in one post. :) . Enjoy.
