The Lighthouse trip is "Wicked Cool" = literally - bring a wool sweater & raincoat for the spray ;) The rangers told the geological & natural & human history of the Islands {Glaciers! Pirates! Fort… Full review by Art O
I'm planning a day on the islands with a girlfriend. We are both senior citizens and live locally. We like walking casually, sightseeing, eating at a nice fairly quiet restaurant (flexible about that) and having an enjoyable day. We would not spend hours and hours on an island, but might go to the beach for an hour to get the flavor of it. Which islands are the best to include, which do not pose a lot of time constraints for the ferry? Is it wise to limit it to just 2-3 islands? thanks for any help Marcia

Because of the ferry schedule it's difficult to plan a short trip. I'd recommend George's island - head out in the morning, explore the fort (a highlight) and back in the afternoon. Unless you have your own boat and can sail directly to Lovell, I would not recommend the beaches on the Harbor islands for swimming. Georges and Spectacle each have nice places to sit and enjoy the view, but they're more like city parks than island getaways. I personally do not like Spectacle Island - I like shade and don't enjoy baking. Spectacle Island seems to be heated from within - who knows maybe there's some interesting chemistry going on there. The only time I'd recommend going is on the last few ferries of the Season in the Fall. If you can time a visit to match up with the Monarch butterfly migration, then it's worth a visit.
If you take your own vessel, can you visit the islands in the off season?

Maybe. Best to check with the National Parks service Boston area. Know that there is a fun, spooky Halloween event on the island with the fortress very soon.
My family is interested in going to Lovell's Island in August. I've read that the boat to George's Island continues on to Lovell's. Is that true for every trip on the schedule? Also, any idea when the last boat from Lovell's would leave? Thanks!
