From Banff to Columbia Icefield Glacier you have to drive 185km. You need a vehicle for that. We arrive with an RV. Maybe you can Rent a car for that in Banff.
Hi my family is planning to drive to Columbia Icefield around 18-20 October 2023. Can we see the Icefield from the visitor centre as I understand the Skywalk will be closed on 9 October. Does the sunset early like before 5pm?

We were there last year around that time. Yes, you can see the Icefield from the visitor center very clearly from a distance. In fact, it's quite a panaramic view. Oddly, you can't see the Icefield from the Skywalk. It was open when we visited then and it provides nice views of other areas. I can't recall when the sunset is. However, it does start to darken early because of all the mountains and forests. You didn't mention how long you were going to be there, but it sounds like you are just going up for the day. If that is the case, I'd suggest you head out as early as possible.
Visiting in a few weeks as part of a larger tour Calgery to Vancouver. What is recommended clothing and footwear. i.e. how cold is it there etc.

We visited the glacier in early May. Although the sun was shining, there was a bitter wind blowing. You are on the glacier for 30-40 minutes. Would recommend woolly hat, warm coat, sweater and walking shoes/boots. It's a fantastic experience, hope you enjoy it and the rest of your trip. I would also recommend the whale watching trip from Vancouver.
